How do I cite online journal articles?

Section 10.1 of the APA manual provides information on citing journals (i.e. periodicals) (pp. 316-321).

Most of the journal articles you have retrieved for your work were probably found online through one of our article databases, such as CINAHL. If this is the case, you need to consider the following:

  • Does the article have a DOI assigned? If it does, you will find it either printed directly on the article or listed in the database, most likely on the webpage that contains the article abstract. If your article does have a DOI assigned,  follow example number 1 (p. 198) and include the DOI at the end of the reference.

Example of what a doi might look like: doi:10.4839/087-38278.23.44.433

  • If the article does not have a DOI assigned, you must provide the homepage URL of the journal  (NOT the URL that the database provides) at the end of the reference. This often requires a Google search of the journal title to retrieve the URL.

Example of homepage URL: http://www.healio.com/journals/jne (for the Journal of Nursing Education)
