How do I cite information from social media, for example, from Facebook or Twitter?

Section 10.15 (rule #s 103-109) of the APA manual contains information on creating references for various types of social media, including tweets, Facebook posts, and Instagram content. 

 

To create references, include the author and, if applicable, the username in square brackets, the date, the title of the post (including the first 20 words of a post and/or a description of audiovisuals in square brackets), the site name, and the URL.  

 

Reference format: 

Author [@username]. (Year, Month Day). Title of the post [Audiovisuals]. Social Media Site. URL
