How do I find the total stock buyback of an exchange?

To find this, please use Bloomberg (available in the Johnston Library). Please book a time to ensure you have access.

In Bloomberg you will need to determine the field for stock buybacks by using the FLDS search. Go to FLDS and search for "capital stock". Look for the decrease in capital stocks field and copy the code.

You will also need the code for the exchange you are interested in -- e.g. S&P TSX (used in the example below).

Once you have the field for decrease in capital stocks (e.g. CF_DECR_CAP_STOCK) open Excel on a Bloomberg machine and input the following:

=BDP("SPTSX Index", CF_DECR_CAP_STOCK")

Note: This will always be a negative.
