How do I get information and statistics on the auto industry?

Ward's Automotive Year Book: Contains sales, production data, and more for North America. Year books for 2000-2021 are available at the Business Library.

MarketLine Advantage: In the top navigation menu click Sectors > Automotive. Use the limiters on the side to filter for specific geographic regions, content type, and dates as needed.

First Research: Enter your email to access the database. Search for keywords like automotive or automobile.

Statistics Canada Automotive Statistics page for date tables on a variety of automotive topics.

Canadian Industry Statistics: Provides industry trends and financial information, such as GDP, labour productivity, manufacturing and trade data. Search for automotive industries by keyword, NAICS code, or browse for them.

Mergent Online: Click the Industry analysis tab. Then: 

  • for industry data, see the Characteristics tab. Click the first drop-down and select Supersector. Then click the second drop-down and select Automobiles and Parts.
  • for data on major companies within a particular industry, click the Membership tab. In the first drop-down click Supersector, Sector, or Subsector and choose an auto category in the second drop-down.
  • for reports, click the Reports tab. Then click the Supersector sub-tab. Check the Automobiles and Parts box and click the download button.

Fitch Connect:

  • Choose Country risk & Industry Research from the top navigation menu. Then click the Industries sub-tab. Choose Autos. Use the “Select a Country or Territory” menu on the bottom right side of the industry profile page for industry-specific country dashboards.
  • For industry data, select Data Tools in the top navigation menu. Choose the Interactive Charts option. Choose a country using the select entities/geographies menu. For the data item select an indicator from Industries > Autos. Next, select a date range and finally a visualization option.

Mintel Reports: For reports that analyze market drivers, sizes and trends, market segmentation, along with consumer attitudes and purchasing habits. Click Category and select Automotive. Refine by region, trend drivers, demographics, or by keyword.

  • To find reports quickly. Click Reports in the top navigation menu and select Industry Reports. Search for auto or other relevant keywords. Refine by geography as needed.

Pitchbook (instructions to create an account here): Search auto in the top search bar. On the results page select the Industries & Verticals tab. Double-click an industry to view a full overview.

Factiva: For statistics, news, and analysis. Hover over Companies/Markets in the top navigation menu and select Industry. Browse for Automotive or Automotive Parts/Tire Stores.

  • Or search for information related to the automotive industry using keywords. Click Search in the top navigation menu. In the "Free Text Search" box enter the industry code in=iaut AND [keywords]. (e.g. in=iaut AND trends).
