How do I find additions and deletions of companies in the major stock indices?

Go to Bloomberg.  Find your index and use the code CHNG. (Data are arranged by year and go back to the mid 1990's.) Not all indices allow this permission. Use the code MEMB and set a date to produce a list for a specific point in time.

In Capital IQ find your list and click on Events Calendar, in the left margin. Open Customize View change the Index Activity settings accordingly. Alternatively go into Screening/Transactions and look in Key Developments.

For the Toronto Stock Exchange the monthly TSX eReview has the members as well as additions, deletions and changes, going back into the 1940s.
