Will Western Libraries pay my Article Processing Fee (APC)?
No. Although Western Libraries allocated $60,000 CAD during the 2016/17 fiscal year to the Open Access Fund, that amount supported the publication of only 28 articles. A total of 78 per cent of the funds, supporting 21 articles, went to commercial publishers that also publish subscription-access journals. Only 22 per cent of the funds went to support fully open access or non-commercial publishers.
Instead, Western Libraries financially supports several memberships that reduce APC costs for Western scholars and support OA infrastructure. APCs may also be an eligible research expense covered by grant funding.
