How do I find out what companies are in an industry?

In MarketLine Advantage, search by Industries. In the report there will be a list of leading companies in that sector

Use Statistics Canada Canadian Business Patterns to determine the number of businesses in any industry, by province.

Use the Bloomberg workstation in the Business Library. In the Equity area do a Custom Search (QSRC) and set the Industry Group appropriately. You can also use the EQS function to screen.

For Canadian private company information, use Mergent Intellect and search by the SIC or NAICS industry code for a list of companies within an industry.

In Nexis Uni Company Dossier.  Under Menu choose Company Dossier and Create a Company List.

For countries worldwide, use the Mergent Online database. Do an Advanced Search and look for the Industry Codes tab. Companies are searched using SIC or NAICS industry classification codes.

For smaller companies/private/public use Mergent Intellect

For private company information (primarily US but some Canadian) see PrivCo. Be sure to use the Advanced Private Company Search function.

Use Capital IQ - available in the Business Library - Quick Screen

Use IBIS World US, Global .....Canada

Use Passport

Use Business Monitor International - Click on Service - then Geography

Use EMIS Intelligence for Emerging Countries- Click on CLIENT LOGIN to gain entry to the resource
