How do I find out what companies are in an industry?

MarketLine Advantage: Click Sectors in the top navigation menu then choose an industry. Scroll down to the Companies section to a see a list of leading companies. Click View All Companies for more companies within the industry.

Nexis Uni: Click Menu > Company Dossier. Then click Create a Company List. Enter a NAICS or SIC code into the appropriate field, add other criteria as needed, and search.

Mergent Online: In the Advanced search screen, click Industry Codes. Select either SIC, NAICS, or ICB and enter a code (use the code lookup tool to browse for industry codes if necessary) and hit "Submit." Add other criteria to the search if needed. Then click "View."

Mergent Intellect: Click the Industry option under the search bar, then search for an industry by keyword or SIC/NAICS code. This will produce a list of leading companies. Click the View Results button to see more companies.

  • Or click Advanced Search on the homepage. Select the Industry tab. Choose SIC, NAICS, or HIC and browse for, or enter, a code. Add this criteria to your search. Add more criteria as needed. Then click "Search."

Pitchbook (instructions to create an account here): Select Companies & Deals in the menu to the left. Search or browse for an industry and add it to your search criteria. Then click Search in the top right corner. On the search overview screen, select the Companies tab to see a list of companies. Click Modify Criteria to further refine the list as needed. 

IBIS World: Search for an industry report by keyword or NAICS code. Within reports see the Major Companies section for detailed information about leading companies within an industry.

Factiva: In the top navigation menu hover of Companies/Markets and select Industry. Browse for an industry. In the industry snapshot click Peer Comparison.

PrivCo (Create an academic account): Includes private company information, mostly U.S. companies, but some Canadian. Click the Search icon on the left side of the screen (magnifying glass icon). On the left side use the Industries box to select an industry. Add other criteria as necessary and click the "Search" button to produce a list of companies.

EMIS (Select Client Log In in top right corner. Then click My full Subscription and Continue to access the database) For emerging market coverage. In the top navigation menu, hover over Industries and click Companies. In the window select a geographic location and then choose an industry or enter a NAICS code.

Bloomberg (available in the Business Library): In the Equity area do a Custom Search (QSRC) and set the Industry Group appropriately. You can also use the EQS function to screen.

S&P Capital IQ (available in the Business Library): Hover over Markets in the top navigation menu and choose an option under the "Industries" heading. In the industry profile select Constituents from the menu on the left.
